The Story of The Red Book Bards
Once upon a time (which in these parts means around February 2007), seven lone writers began studying a course with The Open University called A215: Creative Writing. These writers all had dreams of improving their writing - and they all shared a passion for the art of writing.
They met on a blustery day for a day-school for their Open University course, and a month later, they decided to meet regularly, at first to discuss the course, share writing exercises and provide support for each other as the course progressed. Meeting in the tap room of the not-very-famous York Brewery might not have been conventional, but it worked well for the newly-formed group of writers. Some even claimed that copious consumption of beer improved their writing.
When the Open University course came to an end, that could have meant an end for the band of bards, but they decided instead to continue their monthly meetups, creating their own 'syllabus' of writers' workshops, to develop their craft and improve their skills in writing.
In 2009, the bards decided that the time was right to start thinking about publishing their own collection of short stories, and they aim to publish the collection by the end of 2010.

And what about the name?
Originally, the group called themselves York Brewery Bards, but in January 2010 decided that a name change was in order. The name The Red Book Bards came from the original course that brought them together. The course book for A215: Creative Writing was big and red, and nicknamed The Big Red Book by the course's students, and so  The Red Book Bards we are!
